The ironic thing about this project is that during presentation week, I didn't have time to go to Muay Thai classes because I was working on a Ted Talk about Muay Thai.  I was pretty nervous to present on Friday because I would be expected to do well. During the brain presentation, I presented on the first day and completely screwed up so I wasn't excited for this. Fortunately, the extra time was actually helpful (I changed the main idea/script twice) and I'm happy with my presentation. There are definitely things that I could have improved, like memorizing the presentation and speaking slower. But I like the script itself.  I'm going to continue Muay Thai even after the project is over. I had some fun and there’s a lot more to learn. I don’t think I’ll find time for it during the next school years but I could do it in summer. I like this project because the academic part was easy and it gave me the opportunity to try something new. If I hadn’t done the project, I don’...

I'm back!!!

I went back to North Penn Kickboxing yesterday! I think I could have started Monday but I was too busy. Honestly, I just barely submitted the Les Miserables project. But anyway! I had my third Muay Thai lesson. We started off like normal, jump roping and doing exercises in between. What's weird is that I wasn't as tired as I was on my first day. I haven't done much exercising but I felt pretty good.  Thursdays are sparring days except for beginners. So while the others were sparring, I was relearning the basics. I learned fake- outs and ways to block and dodge. I practiced kicks and punches on the punching bag. Remember when I talked about what was wrong about kicks last blog? Apparently there was much, much more to learn than I thought. But I'm getting there. I was able to successfully perform two roundhouse kicks! And I didn't get injured! :D My mom suggested that the reason I got injured was because I didn't stretch. So, this week I'm researching the scie...

Research

This week, I spent the time researching the moves and history of Muay Thai as part of my new goals after I got the injury. I kind of feel bad for not going to class but I'm sure I will next week. Even after I got off crutches, it still hurt walk fast or do movements requiring my feet/ankles.  So here's what I got from researching the history of Muay Thai : Muay Thai was created in the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th century. Sukhothai Kingdom was what eventually evolved into Thailand. It eventually fell into decline when the capital was invaded by the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in 1349.  Soldiers were taught hand- to hand combat and how to use weapons which eventually evolved into Muay Thai (มวยไทย) and Krabi Krabong (กระบี่กระบอง). Muay Thai became part of the culture of the early people as they would learn the art for self defense, exercise or discipline. Even monks would instruct at Buddhist temples.  Movements of Muay Thai Here are some sources that I looked at: This video de...

I sprained my foot on the first week!! (not clickbait)

3-8-23 I sprained my foot on my second class! In the class, we started with warm up and reviewed moves such as roundhouse kicks and switch kicks. I was practicing a switch kick when for some reason, I fell in a bad position. I would have thought I just rolled my ankle badly but it hurt for more than 15 minutes.  There's actually an emergency care right next to the kickboxing building so my mom and I went there. The doctor confirmed that it was a sprain and it's supposed to take 1-2 weeks to heal.  In terms of planning, I'm not really sure if I should keep this as my project. I had a plan B for if I couldn't get lessons which was crochet. My goal was to make a doll from a crochet Star Wars kit which was quite challenging. I will ask Liv, who is also doing crochet how to crochet. I find this kind of embarrassing because it was literally my second day :/ I'm planning to go back to doing it once my foot is healed, even if it's not for the project. Here's a pictu...

Muay Thai blog 1

I decided to learn Muay Thai because I wanted to learn self- defense. The idea of Muay Thai interests me because it seems to be very efficient as it incorporates the use of “eight limbs” (meaning fists, elbows, shins and knees). Also, it originates from Thailand and I’m Thai.  I’ve never had time to try new things because my schedule was already filled up doing other extracurriculars such as water polo and piano. I was actually planning to do spring polo this spring but I missed the sign up. I had realized it when my friend texted me that there weren't any more spots left and I thought, "Oh, that's fine. At least I'm in already.” Obviously, it turns out I wasn’t. But not doing that clears room in my schedule and now I have the opportunity to learn Muay Thai!   Apparently, my brother was interested too so I entered the adult class with him. There were 5 other people there. The class started with warm up which was jump roping for 10 minutes and random exercises in ...
