Muay Thai blog 1

I decided to learn Muay Thai because I wanted to learn self- defense. The idea of Muay Thai interests me because it seems to be very efficient as it incorporates the use of “eight limbs” (meaning fists, elbows, shins and knees). Also, it originates from Thailand and I’m Thai.

I’ve never had time to try new things because my schedule was already filled up doing other extracurriculars such as water polo and piano. I was actually planning to do spring polo this spring but I missed the sign up. I had realized it when my friend texted me that there weren't any more spots left and I thought, "Oh, that's fine. At least I'm in already.” Obviously, it turns out I wasn’t. But not doing that clears room in my schedule and now I have the opportunity to learn Muay Thai!

Apparently, my brother was interested too so I entered the adult class with him. There were 5 other people there. The class started with warm up which was jump roping for 10 minutes and random exercises in between short segments. There was plank, push ups then crunches. Anyway, I was kind of tired, but didn't hurt too much. The thing I hate about cardio exercise is the burning feeling in my throat but thankfully, that didn't happen. So that was great!

We worked on roundhouse kicks next. I think I sort of got it. At least it's better than I thought I'd do. I'm sure it would be good to explain but I know that I’m not doing it right. So I might as well not say it. I had a "whatever, good enough" attitude because it was my first day but I really do have to fix it. Then, we learned a variation of the roundhouse kick, where you switch feet before the kick. While the others were sparring, Pat and I kicked, punched and kneed punching bags. I think I was improving but still far from decent. We borrowed gloves for the punching part. Never again. They were wet, probably with sweat.

Goals:

In general, I want to learn self- defense skills and would also like to raise my stamina and strength.

There was something so satisfying about being able to perform the moves. I felt that I was actually doing something. It hurt but it just- made me happy- maybe even excited. Which never happens!

I read that exercising releases endorphins which could be a cause to this feeling. Endorphins are released in response to neurotransmitters in the brain. They lessen the pain and make you happy. That's why exercise is proven to reduce stress and decrease anxiety. "the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as "euphoric." That feeling, known as a "runner's high," can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life." Bruce, Debra. “Exercise and Depression: Endorphins, Reducing Stress, and More.” WebMD, WebMD, 1 Apr. 2022, https://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/exercise-depression.

I don't know why it only happened for this sport and not for others but whatever. I don’t usually like “the journey” part of sports (rather than "the destination") so I’m actually feeling optimistic for this!

My plan and resources:

At home, I bought Muay Thai/ kickboxing gloves online. I chose a black and pink pair.
